Foreign policy priorities
- Countries that share both land and maritime boundaries: Bhutan, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, etc.
- Extended neighborhood: Countries of South East Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia.
- Countries that have shared history (Ex: Pakistan), shared ecological space (Ex: Nepal), economic interests;
- SAARC nations etc.
Gujral doctrine Principles
- Non-reciprocity with respect to her smaller neighbors.
- No South Asian country shall allow using its territory against the interests of another south Asian country.
- Countries of South Asia should respect each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
- Differences among the South Asian countries should be resolved through peaceful means etc.
Neighborhood first Policy
- Accords priority to the countries of both her neighborhood and extended neighborhood.
- Emphasis on providing all the assistance needed by the neighboring countries, India-led regional integration, connectivity, etc.
INDIA-PAKISTAN RELATIONS
- India has a complex relationship with Pakistan:'Brother-Enemy' kind of relationship.
- India-Pakistan relationship is the cyclic pattern of Disruption-Dialogue-Disruption.
